Highlights

 • The West Coast Premiere of Road to Peace — Berkeley — May 15th at Rialto Cinemas Elmwood will be shown in collaboration with The Berkeley Rotary Club, which will honor the Dalai Lama with this year’s Peace Prize, planting a tree in his honor in the Rotary Peace Grove in Tilden Park. Conversation, Tibetan food and chai will follow the film.

Honoring Women in Himalayan Cinema  – Oakland — May 16th at Oakland School for the Arts. Featuring Sari Soldiers and The Search . Sari Soliders  a rich and empowering documentary about post-war Nepal  seen through the eyes of six women on different sides of the Maoist insurgency.

Nepal Night with food, conversation and film — San Francisco — May 17th at Variety Club Screening Room. Featuring Himalayan Gold Rush  and Highway. Himalayan Gold Rush documents the  search for ‘Himalayan Viagra’ – a mysterious transmutation between plant and insect which fetches $30,000 a pound in China – creating a gold rush at 17,000 ft.  Local Curry without Worry will be serving traditional Nepali Dal Baht for everyone starting at 7:30pm!

The West Coast premiere of Highway. A narrative feature that takes an understated look at an increasingly common phenomenon in Nepal – roadblocks caused by strikes that paralyzes daily life. The film, co-produced by Danny Glover, offers a kaleidoscopic look at modern Nepali life.

Films at the Himalayan Fair — Berkeley — May 18th at Live Oak Park. Featuring Leaving Fear Behind, a short film shot by Tibetan director, Dhondup Wangchen, who was arrested for the film and remains imprisoned today. The filmmakers wife, Lhamo Tso, who was granted US Political Asylum in February, will speak after the film.
